From the District Superintendent : The Prayer that Never Fails

Could there be such a thing, a “prayer that never fails”? How many times have you prayed and asked the Lord to do something, to heal an illness, to change a circumstance, to provide something miraculously and yet it seems He did not answer your prayer.  In fact the thing you asked Him to change didn’t change and you started to doubt if God even hears you. After all if God heard you, wouldn’t your prayer have been answered the way you wanted? Not if you prayed “the prayer that never fails”.

What is this never failing prayer anyway? Is it some magic language that only God can hear, something equivalent to a secret handshake that let’s you gain admittance to the Almighty? Maybe it’s your heavenly username and password that only you and God know. Maybe those TV Evangelists are right, if I only had enough faith, God is obligated to answer my prayer. No it’s nothing like any of these.

“The prayer that never fails” is a simple prayer that Jesus taught us in His darkest hour. At a time when He needed heavenly intervention the most, He prayed “the prayer that never fails”, and it worked. Listen to Him as he prays:

“…Father , if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.” Luke 22:42 KJV

In the most difficult time of Jesus’ life, He was willing to pray the “prayer that never fails” and because He did, He did not fail God. I propose to you today, that it takes many times more faith to pray the “prayer that never fails” than to demand a certain action out of God.

In these uncertain times when life is being turned upside down and all of the securities the world has trusted are failing, can you join Jesus in His “prayer that never fails” and trust God enough to say “nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.” I guarantee that God will not fail you and more importantly you will not fail God.

Item General Assembly and Conventions 2009
The General Assembly Site Commission has selected the Orange County Convention center in Orlando, Florida, as the site for the 2009 General Conventions and Assembly. This adjustment in location commitment for 2009 became necessary due to planned demolition and construction projects of the convention center in Indianapolis. Several other cities inside and outside of the USA were researched for viability to host the quadrennial events. Consideration was given to criteria such as availability of event dates, demographics of Nazarene constituency, function space, accommodations and local infrastructure.

Orlando has committed over one million square feet of complimentary space to the Church of the Nazarene for the 2009 events. The area surrounding the convention center offers a wide range of hotel accommodations and food service opportunities.

Although this denominational gathering is being moved from the middle part of the USA in 2009, there are great opportunities for international delegate and visitor access in Orlando. The location also provides wonderful options for families to attend the quadrennial events and General assembly in one of the great destination cities of the world.

The dates for the 27th General Assembly and Conventions are June 24 - July 3, 2009

Flint Eastside MissionDon't forget the Benefit Concert followed by Sweet Treats to be held at Richfield Church on Saturday, February 14th @ 7pm. Tickets are $10 each, or 2 for $20. Tickets are available in advance, or at the door.

Belive it or not, spring will be here soon (we hope!). We'll need volunteers to help spruce up around the Mission and do some spring cleaning and work in the flower beds. As spring gives way to summer, we will need to put a coat of sealant on the Mission parking lot. We'll need lots of helping hands that don't mind getting dirty to help with this project!

Finally, we've witnessed record numbers coming to the Mission for help in the past couple of months. Through these very hard times, thank you for your continued support!

God bless!

The Master's Plan for Making Disciples
The Anointing of the Holy Spirit – The Power of His Presence

Scripture – Acts 2:1-4
1
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. [Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)]

Nothing is possible in being Christlike disciples without the power of the presence of God, the Holy Spirit. The clear model for the anointing of the Holy Spirit is found in the disciple group on the day of Pentecost, described like this, “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:1-4).

It is in the power of his presence that we are able to live as Christlike disciples. “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor” (Luke 6:12-16).

Christ Jesus lived in the anointing of the Spirit of God. He prayed until the Spirit of the Father enabled him to choose twelve men into whom he would pour his life, creating his character in them. He directed these disciples to “stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). So, the obedient ones were all together in one place when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Two significant things occurred in the atmosphere of his presence: first, 3000 were saved in a major evangelistic event; second, people were being saved every day in the church homes. The presence of the Holy Spirit will transform the church into the powerful force God intends it to be. Let us offer ourselves to him to be the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Four primary occurrences take place when the Holy Spirit comes. They are as follows: our hearts are purified by faith; we receive power for life and service; we receive power for witness; we live in the presence of the Holy Spirit as he fills and indwells our lives. We call this the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

First, our hearts are purified. In Acts chapter 2, this purity is symbolized by the tongues of fire that came to rest on each of the followers of Jesus present in that upper room. It was manifested in their lives by their desire to live righteously and holy before the Lord, to be obedient to his commands, and to love one another without reservation. Peter testified before the Jerusalem council in Acts 15:8-9 that the same phenomenon took place at the Gentile Pentecost at Cornelius’ house recorded in Acts 10. Listen, “God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith” (Acts 15:8-9).

The first distinction of the entirely sanctified is a pure heart, that desire to live perfectly before the Lord and to do no harm to one’s fellow man. It is manifested in us by a desire to read and study God’s Word, and to pray and commune with God, in order that we may know and do the perfect will of God. We look forward to talking to our Father in heaven, and more importantly, we look forward to hearing what he says to us. The desire of our life is to please him in every way.
